Taken in summer of 1986 at Cates Rd in Rockwood. Buck's oldest child, Mary Elizabeth, and her family were spending some of their summer in Rockwood to have a family get-together. The photo was taken by Buck's youngest child, Marilyn Vance. Joyce Lucille (Mercer) Casper was born to Charles Lawrence Mercer (1883 - 1958) and Chloe Alice Hocking (1885 - 1941). She had siblings Evelyn Juliett, Bruce, Elwyn, Tommy, and Clarence Olin Mercer.
Joyce L. Mercer married John Blaine Casper (1917 - 1982). They had two daughters, Roberta and Pauline Lucile Casper and a son, Charles Blaine Casper.
Joyce and John Casper, who was a pharmacist, opened a pharmacy where they both worked in Boise, Idaho. They then, in 1963, opened Casper's Vista Hallmark and Gift Shop. After John died in 1982, Joyce ran the gift shop on her own. Everyone described her as kind, giving, and "god-fearing."
After working at the gift shop, on a Monday night or Tuesday morning, Joyce was found dead in her car, three blocks from the shop. Later, it was discovered that she had been choked and sexually assaulted. See Businesswoman found dead in car.
UPDATE: Joyce's murder went unsolved for 36 years but thanks to the continued efforts of Boise Police Department, a suspect was identified just today (July 7, 2023). After re-opening the case in 2017 and using new DNA and genealogy advances, a DNA profile led to the family of Frank A. Rodriguez. The family shared additional DNA swabs and this allowed BPD to positively identify Frank, although he had died in 2007. See the whole story at Boise Police just solved her murder.
