The surname Chernel is Hungarian in origin, and in the Central European version of Debrett´s Peerage published in "Poznany/Bratislava, Slovakia"  in 1899, the photocopies of the family tree from there start with a speculation that the name might well have derived from the corruption of "Csernai voda", or "Blackwater" ... indicating that the lands they held were swampy, marshy tracts. The family holdings are located in the central/northwestern corner of Hungary near the fortified town of Koszeg - about 15-20 km from the Austrian border and Szombothaley.
