The COLLINGRIDGE family has a long and noble history with many interesting stories.  The adventurous spirit of some took them from England to Europe and further afield to the New World and to Australasia where they set down roots.  There are records in many countries testifying to their presence, however briefly it may have been.  There are also many still to be solved mysteries which the modern descendents are working on to solve.  This is a complex, complicated but fascinating family - and one to which I am proud to belong.

History

The COLLINGRIDGE family is an old English family with their roots in the Chilterns.  They pre-date the Norman Conquest and were able to use the turmoil of post Conquest England to their advantage, gaining land, station and money.  They sealed their position with advantageous marriages into Norman families.  Their progeny still exists in what is now a prestigious and exclusive family.

COLLINGRIDGE is part personal name and part locational.  Despite the generalisation of the locational part of the name, the family have only been found in one fairly small area of England

Spellings & Pronunciations

There are only two variations: this is different spellings which have endured as names in their own right.  There are numerous alternative spellings which are not true variations.  These result mostly from the name being misheard by someone writing it down or someone writing it as they believed it was, or should be, spelled rather than true variations.  Although the spelling had become fixed by the 19th century, there were still misspellings.  Even into the 21st century the name continues to be misspelled on occasion.
