After researching censuses, I believe he is the son of August and Mary Crouse (both born in Prussia). An 1880 Lisbon, Androscoggin, Maine census shows a household of August (born 1831, Prussia) working in a wool mill, wife Mary (born 1833, Prussia), daughters Tina, Fanny, Annie (all born in Prussia), and son Louis (born 1875, Massachusetts).
