History

Earliest known reference for Cuthil indicates they had a family seat in East Lothian, Scotland, in the 12th century. As recently as the 19th century, Cuthils lived in Polmont, Kirkintillock, and Lenzie, and Glasgow in Scotland. Some ended up in Ireland (by which time the name had morphed to the variant Cuttle), and at least some of these in turn migrated to Toronto in the mid 19th century, and to Southern California by the late 19th century.

My great great grandparents (Cuttles) emigrated to Canada from Northern Ireland in the mid-19th century, and from there to the U.S. a dozen or so years later. Given that they were Protestants, however, it's likely they went to Ireland originally as part of the British occupation. They then married into the O'Bourne family (of County Wicklow). They had been in Ireland at least a century before emigrating.
