My name Momelezi and Dinga is my surname. In Southern Africa's Xhosa language the world "dinga" means a private meeting or a date (i-dinga), however it can also mean someone who is in need (uya-dinga). At this part of the world we have numerous Dinga surnames more especially in South Africa's Eastern Cape province.

History

The history of my surname comes from the name of my great grandfather who his name was Dinga the son of Ntsizi from amaBhele clan in the small town of Tsomo in Eastern Cape province of South Africa. My Ancestor (great grandfather) Dinga is believed to be the one of the prominent figures who worked hard to bring peace during Cape frontier wars which started from year 1779 till 1879 in South Africa between blacks (Xhosa nation) and white settlers . The role Dinga played lead to him leaving his position to succeed his fallen father as a chief of amaBhele clan in Tsomo area. Dinga left his original village Gqogqorha to start new life between Tsomo and Tsojana river. He started to work closely with missionaries who were building churches and schools at Tsojana and surrounding communities also with the help of his six sons who were Jonathan (Jonatan), John (Jon), Joshua, (Joshuwa),David (Dafeti), Cornelius (Koneliyas) and Albert (Albhathi). He is estimated to have died lete in the years of 1800 due to old age sickness.
