The name Discavage is a Lithuanian bastardization of the French words 'De Esclavage,' which means: From Slavery. In the early 1800's, Napoleon and his army invaded Russia taking the route through the country of Lithuania. Napoleon and his army were soundly defeated. Those who did not escape were either killed or thrown into a slave camp. P. Lyon, a young soldier in Napoleon's army, was captured and thrown into one of the slave camps. After some time, he escaped. Intending to return home to France, he followed Napoleon's route of retreat back through Lithuania. In the Lithuanian city of Vilnius, he met a girl with whom he fell in love. She did not speak French and he did not speak Lithuanian. When she and her family asked him what his name was, he thought the wanted to know where he came from. His reply was 'De esclavage' or 'From salvery' in French. Hence they called him Discavage or some variation of it. The young soldier eventually married the girl , made Lituania his home and raised a family
