History

The Dutchburn family seems to have been mainly from England.  The geographical movement of the Ditchburns appears to have occured at the same time as the spread of coal and iron mining in the homelands of the Ditchburns. Also, many of the members of this family were ship owners & ship captains. For instance, following are some of the Ditchburn English ship captains in the 1800's:

My research into the Ditchburn familys points to the same conclucion as Robin Ditchburn - (www.ditchburn.shetland.co.uk) found in his one name study:
Most of the Ditchburns come from the village of east and west Ditchburn, near Alnwick in the northeast of England. Records go back to the Pipe Rolls (Ralph II of Ditchburn, Peter of Ditchburn, and Ralph III of Ditchburn, alive in 1200 A.D.).
