– 1895 – James Dorber was born in Salford, Lancashire, England in 1895 to William Henry Dorber and Ellen Bashford, he had six siblings – William, Frederick, Elizabeth, Agnes, Rebecca, Joseph and Henry, James was the eldest. – 1901 – During the early years of the 1900s, the family were living on Radford Street, Pendleton, Salford – James is five years old and head of the house and father William Henry Dorber is employed as a Banksman Coal Pit Brow. – 1911 – The family were living at 26 Montague Street, Pendleton, Salford during the 1911 census. James is 15 years of age and working as an Above Ground Colliery Labourer, head of the house and father of James, William Henry Dorber is employed as an Above Ground Colliery Foreman. – 1915 – James joined the Royal Irish Rifles and was a member of the 2nd Battalion, where he was deployed as a rifleman. His regimental number was 1359. The 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles was mobilised for war on 14th August 1914 and landed at Rouen, France. The 2nd Battalion took part in many battles during World War I – most notably The First Attack on Bellawaarde and The Battle of Messines. The most devastating being the Battle of Hooge during the summer of 1915 – where the German army began using flammenwerfer – the flamethrower. The flammenwerfer was later included on the list of weapons forbidden to German Forces by the Treaty of Versailles, although Adolf Hitler would supply his troops with backpack flamethrowers during World War II. It is not known which battle James was killed during, but he did so on 25th September 1915. James’ final resting place is in Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium, where his name is listed on the wall of remembrance at Ypres Memorial – Menin Gate.
