Eisma Family History & Genealogy

History

The Eisma family is not a typical family from the old country, but a family from Europe which history goes back to the early middle ages. The name, originally Eysema, was traced back to the middle of the 15th century in Friesland. The first influx of non Friesian was in 1615 when Douw Eisma married Catalina De Masset ... daughter of the Gullio Mazetti Duke of Frinco in Piemonte, Italy. Both Friesland as well as Piemonte were independent countries, which later in history became part of the Netherlands and Italy respectively.

Further globalization of our branch occurred in the 18th., 19th. and 20th. centuries when male decendants of the Eisma family ventured out of Friesland, respectively the Netherlands and married wifes from France, Germany, Norway, England and the U.S.A

 

In the 16th. century the name changed from Eysema to Eisma and has remained ever since. Well not quite true. In the early 19th. century the first Eisma emigrated to the U.S.A. He first worked for the eastern railways, where, as the story goes, a bank clerk consistently mis-spelled his name as Axmear. To make it easier to ... collect his pay and manage his bank accounts he changed his name to Axmear. After the death of his first wife he remarried and migrated to the mid-west where he settled and raised his five sons and two daughters. The name Axmear is well known in the Keswich, Iowa area. Other Eisma's emigrated to the U.S.A. in the late 1930th. and our branch arrived on St.Patricks day 1979..

 

Name Origin

Eisma means son of Eisse (which is a dutch firstname). The Eisma's owned a province once called the Eisma-staate (the Eisma (e)state) in Friesland, in the north of The Netherlands. They were rich farmers and belonged to the aristocracy. The family crest consists of an eagel, quite cool.
