Leannah F (Ellinberger) Neukom May 12, 1909 - Jul 24, 1999 Mondovi, Wisconsin

My great aunt was an extremely interesting woman. Studied English at UWM, and had a great wanderlust as a young woman. Family rumor has her tied to seeing Al Capone on his trips to northern Wisconsin before she met and married Conrad Neukom, though this remains mere rumor . They lived and operated a small bar and restuarant at the junction of hwy 37 and county road B simply called Neukom's. she was a survivor of the great depression, she and her sisters were pack rats and their collections eclectic and vast..the China dolls, 30+, used to.creep me out as a child. She lived along the Buffalo river, one prone to flooding. I remember that in her 80s she had yards of dirt delivered and built a dike around the lower portions of the house with a spade and a wheelbarrow...and a colostomy bag in tow. She was a woman of great intelligence and indomitable spirit. Born ahead of her time. I have a family photo of her, her sisters, brothers, and parents at my mother's house which I hope to be able to post. She was the last surviving sister, preceded by my Aunt Myrtle Serum nee Ellinberger, and my grandmother Neis who also died of cancer at an early age..
