Early Ewalts

These are the earliest records we have of the Ewalt family.

“John Ewalt, Sr., was born in the Palatinate on the Rhine, Germany, in 1707, and emigrated to America with his wife, Sarah, and his two brothers, Richard and Henry. They settled on a farm about two miles east of Bedford, Pennsylvania, then known as Cumberland County, which was a vast wilderness of woods, located on Dunnings Creek, and cleared a farm known as Colfelt Farm, which was less than one-half mile from, and in plain view of an Indian settlement in the lowlands and near this small stream Indian arrowheads have been gathered by the hundreds. The celebrated Ewalt apple originated on this farm.” (Source unknown) This apple, also known as Bullock’s Pippin, is listed among heirloom varieties but is not sold under the Ewalt name today. An article published in The Cultivator and Country Gentleman, Albany NY, February 17, 1881, refers to “… a Spitzenburgh apple. I think it is our old Kane Spitzenburgh. The grafts from which it started here were taken by Mr. John Ewalt from the orchard of Dr. Kane of New Jersey over sixty years ago.” “In a burial plot at the old ancestral home at Bedford, Pennsylvania, the two stones at the grave are marked as distinctly as if inscribed ten or twenty years ago. They read as follows: In memory of John Ewalt Sr. who departed this life November 12, 1793. Age 85 years. The other, Sarah Ewalt, Consort of John Ewalt Sr. who departed this life January 10, 1809.” (Source unknown) A reference from Bean’s History of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania published in 1884, lists John Ewalt as an original land purchaser from the Penns.
