It became popular to change the surname and one person originally named Andersson from the village Hedås close to Forshaga in Sweden took the surname Fafnesbane. According to one branch of the Fafnesbane family, the family is a Nordic family and the name was taken after a mythic Nordic hero, Sigrud Fafnesbane, who slew a dragon for its treasure.  Since the family is Nordic, family members may come from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, or Finland.

The orgin of the name Fafnesbane comes from the nordic mythology. It actually means "dragon slayer" or "dragon killer". Sigrud Fafnesbane, son of Sigmund and Hjördis, is a hero in Nordic mythology and is a part of the saga Völsungasagan. In the saga, Sigrud Fafnesbane kills the dragon "Fafner" to claim a treasure, hence the meaning of the name.
