Name Origin
The name Fraade is a created name. Possibly created by the family on the ship while coming to America. The family name in Europe was originally Friedmann, with two "n's". There is no information when, how, or even why it became Fraade. Friedmann is neither unwieldy nor unpronounceable, unlike many names that were changed in America. It is even less foreign sounding than Fraade. Unfortunately, there is no longer any way of solving this puzzle.

I do not know whether the name Fraade originally had the final "e" that some of the family dropped and some retained, but Max Fraade's papers dating back to the early 1890's carried the "e. The family plot at Mt Zion Cemetery in Maspbeth, NY has a family headstone that says "Fraad".
Nationality & Ethnicity
The family came from Riga, a city in Latvia on the Baltic Sea. The family patriatch was David Friedmann, Grosspapa (5/15/1840- 6/10/1918). The only fact I have about him prior to his marriage is that he had a brother Moritz Friedmann married to Marcia Toumesheff and that they had a daughter Sonia Friedmann Engleberg. We have more information about Grossmama. She was born in Mitau, Courland, Latvia, 12/15/1846, the daughter of Leo Aronstamm. Her name was Hannah, and she had a brother Carl.
Famous People named Fraade
It is said that Grossmama and Grosspapa had thirteen children. I can account for nine of them: Daniel, Maximilian, Charles (originally Nicholas), John, Lydia, Rose, Emil, Alexander and Gregory. The others apparently died in infancy, if indeed there were thirteen. The Hamburg-American Steamship Line ticket for the rest of the family, dated April 27, 1890, lists the family as follows: David 50, Hannah 38, Rose 11 3/4, Alexander 10 1/2, John 8, Lydia 6, Emil 4, Gregory 1 1/2. Hannah's age of 38 does not jibe with her birthdate of 1846 as stated in other documents, which would make her 44. I would guess that the ship's record was in error.
