During the occupation of Belgium by Germany during WWII Janine, then a teenager, refused to live in Brussels and submit to the frequent bombing warnings when people were sheparded into the subway stations and underground bomb shelters so she returned to eastern Belgium with her father Antoine Freyens where she met her future husband Arnold Samuel Shapiro. Janine moved to the US around 1946. Married Arnold in 1949 gave birth to Tamar in Feb 1950 (in Chicago Ill.) and to Gregor March 1952 (in Ithaca NY). Arnold died in 1962 when the family was living in Newton MA. and Arnold had a professorship at Brandeis University. Janine was remarried to Karl M. L. Reisman around 1965; divorced around 1978. Janine lived in California since the middle of the 1970's where she taught French and Spanish at middle and high schools in the San Fernando valley and Calabasas. She emigrated when she was pensioned to Cotignac in the Var the south of France). Janine died in Draguignan after a month of induced coma in March of 2008.
