Fullick Family History & Genealogy

My great-grandfather, Charles Albert Fullick, was born in Cosham, Hampshire, England, on 15 February 1853 to Sarah Fullick, an single girl of 18 years. Charles and his mother were enumerated in the 1851 census for Cosham, living with Sarah's parents on Cosham Lane; Sarah's name was misspelled as "Dorah" in the census. Charles was raised by Sarah's parents, Thomas and Sarah (nee Smith) in Cosham until at least the taking of the census in 1871 and was employed as a shepherd. He left Hampshire and next appeared in Yorkshire, where on 22 December 1875 at Skelton, he married Margaret Alice Simpson, daughter of William and Mary Ann Simpson(nee Cook).

Margaret brought into the marriage a daughter Bertha Simpson, born 19 May 1875 in Brotton, Hampshire. Charles and Margaret had three sons and one daughter in the next five years, each of which died before reaching the age of five months. Charles and Margaret appear in the 1881 census, living in Marske, where he is occupied as an ironstone miner. Simpson Leland Fullick was born to them on 11 May 1881.

Margaret, Bertha and Simpson arrived at the Port of Boston, MA, on 22 November 1881, aboard the SS Batavia. The ship's passenger list indicates that Margaret was 23 years of age, a wife; Bertha, 6 years and Simpson, an infant. It does not appear that Charles accompanied them, so I assume he preceded them.

The family settled in Western Pennsylvania where they had three additional sons; Albert Frederick, born 27 December 1882; Thomas George, born 11 July 1886; and Ernest Clark, born 28 September 1887. Charles was occupied as a coal miner. He died in 1936 in Waynesburg, PA.

My 3xgreat grandfather, George Fullick was transported from Headley, Hampshire to NSW, Australia aboard the ship Norfolk in 1829. He was one of 5 members of the Hampshire Fullicks transported to Australia at various times. His crime was committed at a time of great social unrest in rural England, especially the Home Counties. The enclosure of land between 1770 and 1830 changed English village life and resulted in vast estates being annexured by landowners. Families like George's could no longer grow vegetables or graze their animals on the common land. Their diet became limited to tea, bread and potatoes, supplemented by the inevitable poaching. 1829 was a year of low wages, a harsh winter and poor harvests. The average weekly wage for a labourer had fallen from 15 shillings in 1815 to 9 shillings, whereas the average expenditure for a rural family had risen to around 12 shillings and sixpence. The result was extreme poverty, bad diet and inadequate housing with little chance of bettering their situation. It is no wonder that rural crime rates increased by 30%, with poaching and stealing of food items becoming prevalent.

George went on to become a landed 'gentleman' in the Hexham district of NSW and for many years his descendants carefully forgot his years spent in Australia as a convict.
