We believe that the surname GAMEAU originated in France. However, Joseph Augustine Victor GAMEAU was stated in the newspaper in England to be late of St Domingo (Haiti/Dominican Republic/ island of Hispaniola) when he married Susanna KING at Stilton in Huntingdonshire in 1800. They had a son John Edwin GAMEAU bapt. at St George, Hanover Square, Westminster, Londonin 1802. J.A.V. GAMEAU was a bookseller in Albermarle St, Piccadilly in the early 1800s. It is not known what happened to him after 1806.Susanna would seem to have moved back to Stilton, where she died in 1835 aged 59/60 yerasrs. The following year, the son John Edwin married Rachel ADAMS, we believe also in Stilton. They had sdeveral children before they emigratedto South Australia where they have numerous descendants.
