History

Johann’s son, also named Johann, moved to the town of Pfungstadt. His wife gave birth to their first child. For some unknown reason the minister who baptized the child wrote the surname as “Gandenberger” in the church book, and that name remains to this day.

In the late 16th century in Northwest Germany, only 1st names had been necessary. At this time, however, last names became useful because there were too many people with the same first names. The Gandenberger ancestor was Johann. He had a farm at the foot of a mountain. On the hillside at the foot of the mountain was a flock of geese. He became known as Johann of the goose mountain - or Johann Gantenberg in German.
