H Barber in “British Family Names” [1894] assigned Gedge a geographical origin when he commented “Gedge / Geddes: A Local Name”. Unfortunately he did not state the locality in which it was found, and I have not found “Gedge” as an old place name.

H Harrison in “Surnames Of The United Kingdom” [1912] gives a possible patronymic origin when he states that Gedge is an “English modified form of the Anglo Saxon personal name Gaecg”.

H B Guppy in “The Homes Of Family Names” [1890] says “Gedge has been a Norwich name for centuries; and at the present day it still finds its home in this city and its vicinity. There was a fuller of this name buried in one of the Norwich churches in 1467; William Gedges was a philanthropic Norwich citizen in 1693; and Ambrose Gedge was a common councillor of the city in 1742 (Blomefield). Three centuries ago there was a family of Gedge in Denton (Blomefield)”. (Blomefield) refers to examples listed in the “History of Norfolk by Blomefield & Parkin [1890].
