At least one branch of the Gennip family (the surname was originally van Gennep and can also be Gennep and von Gennip) is from Holland and are Dutch.  This branch of the Gennip family were seafarers and travelled the world - and still do! History

Name Origin

In the early days (King Arthur etc.) the Landlord had a few guys around him who ruled over his lands in his absence. Today, we call them "mayor." One of them was named after the area he was born (and still exists in Holland), a little village called Gennep. His name was John "from Gennep" = John van Gennip.

Spellings & Pronunciations

As explained in the 'meaning' above, a surname often gave where the person was from. As time passed  variations developed and now other spellings can be Gennep, van Gennep, Gennip,  and van Gennip.
(Today, we are provided with a red line unter the words we accidently type in the wrong order. In those days the mistake continued and new family names arose.)

Nationality & Ethnicity

The origin of the Van Gennip family lies in the centre of Holland. The family tree, known from 1720, then split into 4 branches - similar to the 4 directions; north, east, south + west in Holland. A few went to Groningen, the others went to Rotterdam (became sailors / captains and sailed all over the world), a few went to the Breda area, and my great grandfather etc. went to the southern part. The Gennip family is Dutch.
