History

My maternal family name was Beganyi. The family has always considered itself Slovak. They came to the U.S. from about 1880 onward. Coincidentally with coming to the U.S., some started using the name Beganyi-Genscin. I'm told that the second part of the name reflects where they originally came from in Slovakland. I've seen many variations ; but the name seems to have been Americanized to Gensey. Some of the family also continued to use Beganyi. So there is a multiplicity of family names for the same family; spelling variations are almost endless and mostly reflect pronunciation differences between English and Slovak. My grandmother was married (in New Jersey) as Beganiova. I'm not even sure that she was aware that some of her family were using the name Gensey.
