Althought not official, it appears that all Gilgunns residing in North Amercia can trace their ancesterial roots back to Ireland.  Most can trace their roots to 3 generations back of "off the boat" immigrants.  Partially due to oppurtunities but many due to the potato famine of the late 1800s. Primarily Irish those who have the Gilgunn name in North America are almost exclusively from Ireland.
