Wilmer F Goba of Leesburg, Kosciusko County, IN was born on May 28, 1916, and died at age 86 years old on February 5, 2003.
Ilga Goba is my maternal grandmother. I called her Oma. As a child, I would spend the summer months with her and her son, my Uncle Juris, in their Bronx apartment. And if we were not together there, then she would be with me and the rest of my siblings, my mom and dad, in our house just outside New York City, in the suburbs of Rockland County. Oma (Ilga) loved to garden, she planted many beautiful flowers, trees and bushes on our front lawn and backyard as well. Oma started our very first grape patch! And the grapes continue to come! I have countless memories of going with her to the local Laundromat every other day. She would let me put the quarters in the machines, and I'll never forget the day she actually let me pour the soap in! and while we waited for our clothes to dry, it was ritual that we walk to the candy store two doors down, and she buy me a stick of fruit flavored Mentos. Her hair was always in a perfectly slicked back bun, sitting just at the tip of her head. Yet her hair.....when she would let the bun down for bed, or if I would catch her in the morning right before she started to make the bun, was ssooo long. It flowed right past the lowest part of her back. She always had stories to share of her brothers and sisters, some good, some not so good, stories of how she escaped Communism by fleeing to America with her husband Eduard and their two young sons. Stories that just made me believe that she WAS super woman, here in the flesh. Oma raised three young children (my mom and my two uncles), all by herself once my Opa passed away. I am so grateful, so filled with the happiest and pleasant of feelings that I too had the opportunity to be raised by her as well. And every time I look up at the night skies, I can look up there knowing that my Oma is that brightest star shining down on me.
