The farthest back I can go with the name is to Janos Goldschnikl 1853-1914 in Nagyborzsoney, Hungary. His children were my grandmother Maria Goldschnikl Harkas Toth and she helped her brother John Goldschnikl and his wife Mary and small son Henrich to immigrate to Chicago in 1914 where John and Mary had another son John. Henry married Julia and had a son Charles. My grandmother's brother died in Chicago in 1938. She had a brother Karoly (Carl) who came to the US with his wife Mary and lived in Buffalo, NY. They helped my grandfather Adam Toth bring my grandmother back to the US and marry in Chicago Sept. 2, 1911. Carl may have died in WWII. Grandmother had a sister in Hungary named Madria and a brother Gustave who died in WWI in France. His name is on the war memorial in Nagyborzsony. My grandmother died May 4, 1961 in Bemidji, MN.

Name Origin

My great grandfather Janos Goldschnikl was born and raised in Nagyborzsony, Hungary. He maried Roselle Katherine Gehmacker who was born in Worrshadt, Germany. Nagyborzsony was a mining town separated from the rest of Hungary by a mountain range. The people there were Reformed (Lutheran) rather than Catholic as was the rest of Hungary. From the 13th century on, the mountains were rich with gold, silver and nickel.
Mining was the heart of the community. I would assume that the Goldschnikl name was old in that community and went back referring to the gold and nickel ming activities of my ancestors.

Spellings & Pronunciations

The name had a jewish sound so several relatives changed their spelling to avoid presecution from Gotshik to Gotschnikl to Golscnikl. I believe there are many alternative spellings.
