Emma was born in 1849 in Wisconsin. In 1870 Emma and Elias were living in Napa, California but in 1880 were found in San Francisco. Elias was a wood-worker. In the 1880 US Census Elias and Emma had children Robert, Bertha and Shirley Groat.
