From lifelong residents of the Grossheim, Germany area: The name dates back to medievel times, when a minor feudal lord lived in a small castle on a hill overlooking his land and tenants. It was apparently the largest home in the area, hence the name "Grossheim: (loosely translated as "big house/home"). By all accounts, this feudal lord began to overtax the peasants, to the point where they decided to rebel against him. When they went to fetch him and his family from his castle, he escaped with his family. They then became highwaymen, eventually assimilating into society in the Hamburg area.

In 1980, he transferred to the Marine Corps Reserves, where he served until 1992, working as a helicopter airframe/powerplant mechanic. He married Ann L. (Cargill) Grossheim in 1980. They had 4 daughters: Jeannette, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Gretchen.
In 1987, he became a full-time professional firefighter, and started working for the City of Melrose (MA) Fire Department. He served in this capacity until 2008, when he was deemed to be disabled (work-related), and retired. In 1993, he earned his FAA Private Pilot Certification, a promise he had made at his father's funeral (his father was a WW2 B-17 pilot).
He relocated to Camden, SC in 2010, where he resides to this day. In 2013, he finalized his divorce with Ann, and remarried, to Diane S. (Bastien/Piermarini) Grossheim.
