My grandmother, Helen, was a light in our family's life. She would gather the family and all her friends in her little apartment, cook for them and we'd laugh the night away. She had a sense of humor that could light up the room. She lived for a good 80 years, and was never short on stories to share and jokes to tell. She enjoyed speaking of her family and all the great moments we shared. She loved to laugh and once she started she couldn't stop. She was clever and intelligent. She taught me to swim, to cook and bake, how to play poker as we bet with pennies, and she even taught me to speak a little Greek. I remember her picking me up from school and going back to her apartment where we'd play cards, watch Sponge Bob no matter how much she said she couldn't stand the show, and right around dinner time, she'd make my favorite food at the time: Spaghetti with butter. She'd take me with her to restaurants, the local library, and even the temple where the volunteered. No matter where we went, people knew who she was. I remember always going to this one restaurant near her apartment. We would walk in, and Nanny(that's what I called her) would get greetings from all the waiters and even the owner of the restaurant. I remember all of Nanny's friends telling me how lucky she was to have a granddaughter like me, and how lucky I was to have a grandmother like her. They would recall memories they shared with Nanny, and how good she was at cooking and telling yet another one of her funny stories. The thing I remember the most about Nanny was her humor. She could take serious stories and turn them into comedic stories. I remember being about 6 when she taught me how to make Spanakopita, a popular Greek desert. I loved making it, and spending time with her as we went to her pool, or even just a drive around Greensboro. I don't think there was ever a day I didn't want to be with her.
