Business Section of Madison, NC
This is a postcard of the business area of Madison, NC, back around 1911. It appears to be S. Market St., as it slopes up as that street still does today. A livery stable is on the left, which is no longer there now. (My grandmother, Kate Harger, had sent the postcard to my grandfather, Cleve Crews.)
Drugstore in Madison, NC
This is a picture postcard sent to my grandmother, Kate Harger--(later Crews) from her dear friend Elsie Payne--later Daniel) when they were both living in Madison. I'm sure they used to hang around this drugstore with their other friend, Thomas Ruffin Pratt Jr. My grandmother told me that she used to like to drink "Black Cows", which I can imagine could have come from this very drugstore.

This is a picture of my grandmother, Kate Harger --later Crews, and her two friends (and distant relatives) Thomas Ruffin Pratt Jr., and Elsie Payne--later Daniel. They hung around together mostly in Madison, NC. They were most likely in the creek near Elsie's home, which was the Dr. Artemus Payne home at Moore's Mill---now under Belew's Creek Lake. Ruffin Pratt later became a doctor, and moved to California, where he actually treated many actors and actresses in Hollywood for a time. He died and is buried in San Luis Obispo, Ca.

This is young Catherine Cleo Harger, my grandmother, who was called "Kate". She was the daughter of Walter Lee and Lillie Lancaster Harger,and was born near White Plains, Surry Co. NC. She lived there, as well as in Sandy Ridge, (Stokes Co.) Stoneville, NC---and Madison, NC when she was growing up. Kate's mother died when she was 16, and she went out on her own and worked to became a nurse. She later married Grover Cleveland "Cleve" Crews. They later lived in Greensboro, NC, where Cleve was a conductor for Southern Railway.
Great Grandmother Harger
My great-grandmother, Lillie Lancaster Harger, who was the daughter of George Whitfield and Docia Wilson Lancaster, and who lived in the Ayersville/Sandy Ridge communities of Rockingham and Stokes Cos. NC. (Right on the county line for those counties) She was descended from the Lancasters of Floyd Co. Va. and the Wilsons, Martins, and Richardsons of Rockingham/Stokes Cos. NC. She was married to Walter Lee Harger, a Henry Co. Va. native. Lillie was the mother of Kate Harger Crews, and Nina Lee Harger Styers Adler. Three more children had died very young. Lillie died ca. 1905, and her final resting place is a mystery. It is believed that she was buried in Stokes Co. in an unmarked family "burying ground" belonging to some Hargers.
