Souli was an independent area consisting of villages in the mountain area fo Epiros. The area was controlled by the Ottoman Turks The newly arrived Governor of Epiros ALI_PASSA wanted to annex SOULI under the Ottoman rule. The Souliotes Refused and the Hostilities begun .One family called Melas consisting of seven Brothers and parents. Fought the Ottoman in many battles. In one battle the Melas brothers eliminated many Ottoman troops and ALI_PASSA called them Hasapis (Butchers) and put a Price in their Heads. Three of the brothers died in action and four came South to Peloponesos The last One Basilios fought in Mesolongi and came out the siege with his Fighters. First in Mani and than Two of them came to Xeropegado and Pegadadia kept the name Hasapis and one came to Ligurio kept the Name Melas
All Hasapis-Melas fought and died for the Independence of Greece and with FIRST CAPITOL NAUPLIO Right across the bay of Kiveri. Nicolas served as enorkos to King Othon and first resident of Kiveri. That is how our Hasapis name came in Kiveri (search Dr Demitracopoulos 1956)
