Aldora Hegenwald of Shreveport, Caddo County, Louisiana was born on October 22, 1896, and died at age 85 years old in February 1982.
James Hegenwald of Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama was born on February 13, 1896, and died at age 70 years old in April 1966.
I don't know much about Mr. Hegenwald's early years, except that he was from the South and had the courtly manner of an old school Southern gentleman. He and his family (wife Betty, son John, Jr., often known as Heggy, and daughter Mary (Missy) lived in Darien, CT, on Brookside Road, just across the Granaston Lane bridge over Goodwives River from us (we lived at the dead end of Oak Crest). For many years, he ran the "Men and Boys" clothing store on the Boston Post Road in Darien. Generally he worked in the store by himself, but occasionally he would bring in another equally gentlemanly sort, such as high school English teacher Donald Gilbert, to help out at busy times. His clothing was of the traditional British variety, quite similar to what one would have found in Brooks Brothers at the time. Tall, slim, and classically good-looking, he was a splendid model for the clothing he sold. I loved his clothing, but most of the time we simply couldn't afford it; the store was small enough and its stock small enough that things of necessity cost more than they would have cost at one of the big New York stores, where my mother shopped for us. Occasionally I would buy a small accessory item as a Christmas present for my dad. How Mr. Hegenwald got into haberdashery, I don't know. He was intelligent, literate, and highly articulate, and could have been a success in any number of professions, including teaching or law. I used to enjoy talking to him during the store's slow hours, which were apparently more numerous than he would have wished. He was an excellent conversationalist and one of the few adults in town who would listen to me. I understand that he and his wife ended up in New Canaan.
