Amos was born 9 November in 1813, probably in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It was here that he married Elizabeth MEANS on 3 April 1836. Tax rolls prove that he lived in Hilltown Township of this county in the years 1837-1839. By 1840 he had moved to Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio. Amos HENRICKS was a carpenter and kept a day book of his "jobs" and how he was paid, often by barter. He often made coffins and included the size and name for whom this was made.
Elizabeth MEANS HENRICKS had 3 children: Barbara, Jacob (who died at age 1 month) and Susanna. Elizabeth died 8 July 1843.
After Elizabeth's death, Amos married Susanna BERGEY CASSEL (KASSEL), widow of John CASSEL. Susanna and John had several children: Abraham, Israel, Elizabeth, Mary and Jacob. Abraham and Jacob died as infants. All this Amos recorded in his Bible.
Susanna and Amos had four more children: Lavina born 1846, John Berge (my great grandfather) born 1848, Jeremiah B. born 1850 and Franklin B born 1854.
Sometime in the 1850's Amos and family moved to Clinton County, Iowa. We believe Susanna might have died there in 1861 but as of now, no record of her death has been found outside of the Bible pages. Amos moved back to Ohio and married a 3rd wife, Susan Smith on 31 October 1863. They then moved to Owen County, Indiana. Amos died there on 21 April 1867. His obituary in the Herald of Truth indicates that while watering his horses, one broke loose and had to be pursued, and that afterwards his intention was to visit his brother-in-law, possibily Elias Smith who lived in Clay City nearby. After chasing the horse, Amos felt ill and was helped to his bed where he died shortly after (on 21 April 1867). Amos is buried in St. Peter's Reformed Church Cemetery on the west side of Owen County.
