My employer was a physician his name was Harvey Gerald when his father came into the country through Ellis island he was from Germany and his last name was Berman.his father was Louis berman. When he was asked what his name was he said Mr (her)Berman. When he was given the documents to enter the United States he realized that they had put Mr Berman as his last name (herberman) at the lines were so long that he just left it like that because he certainly did not want to get back in line. So that thus they became herberman instead of Berman
