History

My former (now deceased) Father in Law (John R. Herkaler (VI) ), deceased, June 2015), told me the family History of the 'Hirkala'/Herkaler name.

The Herkaler name derived from the actual spelling as 'Hirkala', a Czech origin.

As far back as I understand, there were 2 brothers, John and Joseph Hirkala that came to America with their mother. (Obviously a few more before them, May be/are documented in the Czech Republic?)

Several properties were owned and later sold off by the 'Hirkala' brothers, 2 or 3 on Van Bussem and Meyer Street, (tax records) in Garfield, NJ.

Joseph Hirkala became a Senator in Passaic, NJ and the Brother John, had a falling out. To sever the family ties, John Herkaler (would have been my grandfather in law, John (Hirkala) Herkaler (deceased in 1999, which was the 3rd), as my son John Russell Herkaler (9/22/1993-9/19/15 declared brain dead, 9/21/15 officially declared deceased, of Montague, NJ), is the 6th in the line of succession, of the name John 'Hirkala' Herkaler.

The name change was explained, to 'Americanize' the family name and ancestry.

To date, I am unaware of it's meaning, but it's original is From Czechoslovakia.
