Name Origin

Herse was a "title of ancient aristocracy" used in Scandinavian countries which meant "a local chieftain".  It was appended after the first name, so Olaf would become Olaf herse. If Olaf was named Olaf Gunnersen, then he would become Olaf herse Gunnersen.
I assume that possibly as some stage, when fixed surnames replaced patronymic naming, the title of herse, was simply acquired by some office bearers at the time.
