Mary Frances (Eis) Hessler, 87, of Humboldt, Nebraska formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, was born on January 23, 1924, in rural Richardson County, Nebraska to Rudolph and Bessie (Klossner) Eis. Mary attended elementary school in Dawson and Rosedale Rural District 89. She graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1941. Mary participated in the High School Girl Reserves and the Epworth League of the Humboldt Methodist Church. She was also a member and leader in the 4-H programs of Richardson County. Mary taught in rural schools south of Humboldt from 1941 to 1947. She was a 1948 graduate of the Lincoln School of Commerce and worked as a clerk/stenographer in telephone companies in Lincoln and Columbus from 1948 to 1960. Mary worked for the United States Department of Agriculture from 1960 to 1985 and became the administrative assistant to the head statistician of the Statistical Reporting Service. Mary was united in marriage to Donald Hessler on July 2, 1951 at St. Paul Methodist Church in Lincoln. She was a devoted wife and family member. Mary was an avid gardener and nature lover who also liked to do research in genealogy. She became a member of the Humboldt Methodist Church in 1937 and of the St. Paul Methodist Church in Lincoln in 1956. Mary was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi, DAV Auxiliary, and the Richardson County and Nebraska Historical Societies. She was also a member of Tabitha Auxiliary, Frank H. Woods Telephone Pioneers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees-Lincoln Chapter 199, and the Nebraska Czechs of Lincoln. Mary did volunteer work for the Nebraska State Historical Society, Tabitha Nursing Home, the Frank H. Woods Telephone Pioneers Association, the Telephone Museum, and Ruth Pyrtle Elementary School. Mary died at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska on Friday, April 1, 2011 having reached the age of eighty-seven years, two months, and nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald, a brother David Eis, a sister Betty Marfice, brother-in-law Stan Flentje, and 2 nephews. Mary is survived by her sister Annabelle Rumbaugh and her husband Melvin of Humboldt, NE; a sister Ruth Ellen Flentje of San Marcos, TX; brother-in-law Bill Marfice of Table Rock, NE; 7 nieces and nephews; and 6 great-nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Mary-Ellen Gaither officiating. A Graveside Committal Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, 6700 S. 14th ST., Lincoln, Nebraska, meet at Gate 2. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mary (Eis) Hessler HTRS Scholarship Fund at Humboldt Public School Foundation.
