My great Uncle, Paul Revere Hipple, gave my mother a copy of the family's history he had. Over the years my sister and I have added to the family research, but have never gotten back any further then what Uncle Paul had. I am hoping one day to find the ancester who first came to America and possibly even by some miracle a few of the ancestors from overseas. The following is what information I have on the Hipple family.

Notes for VICTOR GAULLACHER HIPPLE:
Hi Teri,
I really do not know much about the Hipples. I just have those few in my data base that I found following Hartranfts. My Sylvester Hipple was married to Emma Kline. Emma's mother was Lavina Hartranft.
Having said that I looked up Hipples in the Genealogical Records Of The Schwenkfelder Families which was published in 1923. I knew that Hartranfts were in that book. In the book it shows Victor Gaullacher Hipple born 16 Jan. 1882 married Elsie Mae Evans born 1 Dec. 1887. They were married 6 July 1912. In 1918 they lived at 221 Cinnaminson St., Riverton, N. J. Victor was the son of Rufus Harrison and Mary Ann Hipple.
According to the 1900 census Victor lived in Rapho Township with his parents, Rufus and Mary. Also living there was Mary's brother Samuel Gallacher. So according to the census Victor was also a brother of Sylvester and their mother's name was Mary Gallacher also spelled Gaullacher.

1910 census shows Victor boarding in Riverton, Burlington, NJ at age 28 occupation stenographer
1920 census in Riverton, Burlington, NJ shows Victor married at age 37 to Elsie Hipple who is 31, occupation is stenographer at a nursery.

2 TOBIAS HENRY HIPPLE (JOHN1) was born June 02, 1851 in Manor Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, and died November 08, 1924 in Paris, Edgar Co., IL. He married MARTHA JANE MOREHOUSE December 26, 1872 in Edgar Co., IL, daughter of JONATHAN MOREHOUSE and ELIZABETH STORY. She was born September 04, 1852 in Paris, Edgar Co., IL, and died October 16, 1932 in Paris,Edgar Co., IL.
Notes for TOBIAS HENRY HIPPLE:
Interview, Jeanette Findley and Martha Ogle, undated:
Tobias Hipple did cement work, laid drainage tile and built bridges. A bridge he built in Vinita, OK, was there years later -- Paul R. Hipple was passing through on vacation and looked it up. Tobias did work in Dennison, TX, Vinita, OK, and Independence, KS, also. He met Martha Jane when he laid drainage tile on her father's farm.
Tobias, Martha Jane, Percy, Ray. Paul, and Anna's husband James Reed, went out-of-state to work. Charles Reed was old enough to also be on the work crew. While they were gone Kate and Hugh McCullough lived in the Hipple house and that's where their three children were born. When Martha was three years old, they bought a house at 1304 South Main Street. Hugh had worked with the contractor and helped build the house.
Tobias died of complications of epilepsy caused years earlier when he fell, head-first from a tree, onto a brick walk at his home on Cherry Street. He became violent and would turn on Anna Hipple Reed's son, his grandson Charles, whom he loved dearly.
Newspaper clipping [from Paris, IL, paper..."about 1900" in pencil]
HIPPLE LANDS BIG CONTRACT
Former Paris Man Is Interested In Mammoth Piece Of Road Building
SIXTY-SIX MILES OF HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION
Work Includes Two Hundred Bridges and Culverts, Calling for About Fifty Thousand Cubic Yards of Concrete
Tobias H. Hipple, a former citizen of Paris, who is now located at Denison, Tex., has written an interesting letter to Mr. Wm. B. Sheriff, of this city, relative to a big contract, in which he is interested at that place. He is identified with the firm of Hipple and McSpadden, general contractors, and the job in question is one of rock road construction, which it will require about three years to complete. Some excerpts from Mr. Hipple's letter, will
doubtless be of interest to his many Paris friends, being as follows:
"We have a contract here for sixty-six miles of rock road, fourteen feet wide and six miles of city streets, of the same width, though the property owners are now talking of having the work extended to the full width of the street. All bridges and culverts are to be of concrete and this part of the work is under my supervision. There are about two hundred of these bridges and culverts, calling for about fifty thousand cubic yards of concrete. Of the
bridges, forty are large and sixty small, a number of them having a span of sixty feet. Three of the roads are now almost done. We are going to haul our crushed rock with traction engines and patent reversible wagons, that hold eight yards each and one engine will pull three wagons, at a guaranteed speed of five miles per hour. These wagons cost $650 each and the engines $2800 apiece.
"We have one of the largest crushers on the market and the contract price for the job is two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, with three years in which to complete it. We have had but one rain since we have been here, that being the first in about three years, all of the creeks and nearly all of the wells being dry. Most of the people have had to haul water for miles. We dug a well in the bottom of a creek for our water and you should have seen the people who watered their stock and secured water for other purposes there." Mr. Hipple states that the Winter in Denison has been exceedingly mild, there being but one severe cold snap, which was of recent occurrence and played havoc with the early blooming fruit trees.
Paris Beacon News, 11 May 1974
" Sixty years ago"
Tobias Hipple left for Lake Charles, La., where he will build 14 miles of brick road.

On his last visit to the home on South Main Street in Paris, IL, Charles gave a card to his niece printed with his favorite poem:
"Transmutation"
When the last call comes, I would journey back
Toward the setting sun by the old dim track;
I would lay me down in the pasture's breast,
As the sun goes down in the deepening West,
When the low wind stirs in the rippling grass
And the blackbirds wheel and the wild geese pass;
And what care I if the night be dark?
I shall sweetly sleep to the coyote's bark--
The sage hen's call and the owl's weird cry;
And the rattlesnake's rhythmic lullaby.
To be one forever and aye with the sod--
The night, the prairie, the stars and God.

Notes for JOHN HUGH MCCULLOUGH:
Martha Ogle remembered being told that her father left home at an early age and became a "jack-of-all trades." He worked in restaurants in Oakland and Quiney, IL, and was a good cook. He was a cabinet maker and a farm worker among other tilings. He worked with a company from Robinson, IL, and helped build a house at 1304 South Main, and the house next to it, in Paris, IL. Later, after his marriage to Kate Hippie, they purchased the house at 1304 because he knew it was well-built. (After their divorce, Kate got the house in the settlement. She
rented the house to a Mr. Sensenbrenner for awhile. Walt & Martha Ogle lived there with Kate briefly, though Kate was living with Dane and Virginia at the time of her death. Walt and Martha took a mortgage to purchase Dane's part of the house after Kate's death. They lived there with their four children until 1955. The mortgage was defaulted and the house was sold at auction. Mr. Charles Lewis purchased the house and extensively remodeled
it.) Before 1929, Hugh worked for Cummings Car & Coach Company, builders of Chicago streetcars. After the Crash of 1929, he rented a woodwork shop on Roberts St., Paris, IL. He was good at working on cars, carpentry, gardening, cooking and farming.

Paul Hipple Ends Career Of Postal Service
The new year will hold more than normal significance for Paul Hipple, 315 Alexander street.
For the first year in the past 40, he won't be making the daily rounds of a postman for the Paris Post Office. Mr. Hipple, city carrier since 1920 on city route six, officially retires this month after delivering cards and catalogues, letters and packages to well over a thousand men, women and children along his route. Together with his military service, Mr. Hipple will have completed more than 40 years in government service. There have been many changes in the postal service since Mr. Hipple was appointed a regular carrier to start his
association with the Post Office. Not the least have been five separate changes in his route. When he made his final rounds, only two residential blocks and two business blocks remained out of the original 88 blocks he started to walk nearly 40 years ago.
But the volume of mail, and number of families, has increased. Upon retirement he was serving 1,250 persons in 525 homes along the route. For those "customers," the volume
of mail has increased by 400 percent over the amount delivered during his early years along the route. As the volume went up, some sacrifice had to be made in the frequency of delivery.
Forty years ago, residential areas were carried twice daily, Mr. Hipple recalls, and the business district received four daily deliveries.
In addition, carriers spent several hours Sundays and holidays sorting mail, and manning the route windows at the post office for any resident who wished to come to the post office building to pick up their mail. Parcel post had just been launched by the Post Office Department when Mr. Hipple joined the force of mailmen. And all the details of service had not been worked out, at least at the local level. When he started, he and several other mailmen were assigned to take turns delivering parcels aboard a threewheeled motocycle equipped with a box trunk, during the late afternoons and early evenings after the regular mail routes had been completed. The arrangement continued until a requisition for flashlights to read house numbers was forwarded to the district post office. This brought an inquiry "Why flashlights?" and shortly a directive to put on additional men to make parcel post deliveries, and stop using regular mailmen overtime.
Forty years of mail delivery carries with it a wide range of experiences and observations of human nature. Mr. Hipple has probably run the range of such incidents, from pulling youngsters out of open man holes to making small deliveries for elderly persons along the route. These "small deliveries" terminated for one woman, however, when she requested the postman to bring along a five-pound bag of sugar from the store.
One of Mr. Hipple's fondest recollections is of "Jiggs," a nondescript but loyal white canine that reversed the usual animosity between mailman and dog. A family moved into Oak street early in Mr. Hipple's postal career, together with "Jiggs," their dog.
"I made it a practice of making friends with all dogs along the route," the postman noted, "But this one really stuck. He would follow me around the entire route each day. Started by meeting me at his house, then started to pick me up on the start of the route at the comer of the square. People could always tell when I was coming by watching for Jiggs, he would be about two houses in front of me most of the time."
Jiggs became so faithful that he even came to the Hipple home on holidays and days off. "He'd scratch to come in, I'd pat him a minute, then he'd turn and head back for home.
"For five years he didn't miss a day on the route or visit at home." Then companionship ended one night when Jiggs was hit by a vehicle and crawled to the steps of his home to die.
During his tenure Mr. Hipple served under seven post masters, starting with Thomas Moyer, and continuing through Paul Shutt, Frank Beals, Lloyd Lamb, O Rice Jones, Grady O'Hair and currently Ray Foley. The route has been taken over by Emil Kerrick while Mr. Hipple enjoys his final vacation leave time. No definite plans are on hand for the future, except to enjoy the reflections of his association with postal subscribers along the route. Summing up 40 years, the retiring postman noted, "People on my route were always wonderful, and they've
given me the satisfaction of looking back on a job well done."

"Paris Sailor Home on Leave After More Than Two Years Spent At Sea" By H. P. Twyman
Paris, 111., Nov. 11— Tales of the lifetime experiences of Sinbad, the historically famous merchant-sailor of Bagdad (Baghdad), although interesting in their way, seem commonplace when compared with the adventures, both hazardous and noteworthy, of Paris' Walter Ogle, crowded into the two years and eight months he sailed the seven seas as a petty officer first class on a heavy cruiser of the United States Navy. Home on an extended and richly earned rest for a visit with his wife, the former Martha McCULLOUGH. and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ogle, of South Jefferson avenue, Petty Officer Ogle brought with him a log he has
religiously kept of his many voyages over many thousands of miles to the four corners of the earth, which include participation in two major invasions.
Seaman Ogle must have been born under a lucky star, for at the very outset of his maritime career he was transferred to a heavy cruiser from the crew of a small American transport the same day the latter vessel was sunk by a German torpedo off the Atlantic coast. Mr. Ogle says he has no knowledge of the fate of his former shipmates.
Although somewhat adverse to publicity, Officer Ogle consented to a perusal of the record he has kept. Briefly summarized, entries in this log reveal the following major events in which the Paris sailor had a part:
When the invasion at Casablanca took place in November, 1942, Ogle was aboard the warship that transported Gen. George S. Patton and Admiral Hewitt to the North African coast. A naval engagement just previous to the landing cost the enemy four ships and a presidential citation for this victory is anticipated.
Took Part in D-Day
For 25 days Officer Ogle participated in battle off the coast of Normandy at the time of the D-Day invasion of France.
He had a part in the intensive 17-day bombardment off Toulon, Nice and Marseilles, on the southern coast of France and says all the ammunition of his ship was expended in all but silencing the coast artillery of the Germans. His ship was hit, but there were no casualties and only minor damage was sustained.
It was in the course of this bombardment that the crew of which Ogle was a member, captured 800 Germans stationed on Prot Crow Island, off the southern French coast and transported them to North Africa.
Ogle's ship joined the British fleet for seven months of convoy duty in northern waters, guarding mine sweepers and merchantmen loaded with supplies for Russia.
Steaming the farthest north any warship had gone, Ogle says that at one time the vessel reached a point only 750 miles distant from the North Pole. He crossed the Arctic Circle three times and had a part in the capture of Spitzbergen from the Germans. Later he engaged in maneuvers designed to lure into battle the German fleet, lurking in the waters of the far north.
Inspected by King:
At Portland, England, Ogle's ship was inspected by King George VI and party, the inspection taking place just prior to D-Day. Ogle has a number of snapshots of the king's party as a reminder of this occasion.
Ogle has touched so many ports that he has lost all count. He does recall stopping at Reikiavik (Reykjavik), capital of Iceland, where, he says, the residents enjoy bathing in the water of a geyser, delightfully warm the year around except in the months of January and February.
Paris' seaman has crossed the Atlantic no less than 14 times on various missions, including convoy duty for ships loaded with planes bound for the Ivory Coast of West Africa.
Despite the excitement and thrill of it all, Ogle says he has had enough of sea experiences and that instructions in advanced welding on dry land in the near future will be a most welcome change from the role of a seagoing shipfitter. Thus ends a prolonged saga of the sea experienced by a native Parisian."
"Find Paris man Dead At Home Early Today"
Walter Edwin Ogle, 58, of R.R. 6, Paris, was found dead at approximately 3 a.m. today at his residence. Death was from apparent natural causes. According to Edgar County Coroner James Honnold who was called to investigate, Mr. Ogle had visited with friends at his home earlier in the evening, and was found on the kitchen floor by his son, James, who called
authorities. The house was locked from the inside and no foul play is suspected. Honnold reported that family members said Mr. Ogle had not worked for some time due to health problems and the family suspected he had suffered a stroke sometime earlier, although he was reluctant to seek medical help. No inquest is planned according to Honnold.
The body was removed to the Stewart-Carroll Funeral Home where funeral services will be announced Monday.
Mr. Ogle, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the North Arm Catholic Church and the St. Bernice American Legion Post No. 108, was born in Ashmore Jan. 13, 1920. He was the son of Charles and Mary Barry Ogle. He married Martha McCullough in 1944, and she survives.
Also surviving is the son, James of Paris; three daughters, Miss Theresa Ogle, Mrs. Mary Knoll, both of Paris, and Mrs. Jeanette of Florissant, Mo.; a brother, Carl of Paris; and two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Bright and Mrs. Ethel Heelen, both of Paris. There are five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother."
" Walter E, Ogle"

Father Donald Meehling will be celebrant. Visitation will be from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Stewart-Carroll funeral home with the rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in North Arm Cemetery.
