As a member of the Infantry, Janhunen would have been trained in various combat techniques, including small arms use and close combat.
He was discharged on June 12, 1945, after serving for four years and five months. His discharge indicates that he served honorably and that his service was terminated because of the end of the war.
Otto married Cecile Irene Aubuchon (1921–1974) on January 16, 1943 back in his hometown of Westminster, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. The couple had multiple children together including Sheila Ann Janhunen (1944-1947), Peter Allen Janhunen (1947-2019), Nancy J Janhunen (1958-1982), and Gail Ann Janhunen (1963-2003).
