The grand great Kalowa wasn't called Kalowa but is believed to have been called Mutetwa and had a number of wives. When ever he got to a household he never used to knock for permission to enter but would just budge in . People started calling him by the nick name Kalowa meaning " just entered" thus how the name came about. The Kalowas are a chieftainship family.

Famous People named Kalowa

One of the famous guys was Lapken Kalowa who was born in one of the polygamous families in a family of three him being the only male child. He was born on 05 /02/1921. He grew up a very hard life but managed to go to school and ended up being a medical orderly of his days, the equivalence of a morden day pharmacist. He helped a lot of sick and poor Malawian nationals who could not afford to visit medical facilities. He was one of Jehovah's Witnesses from a juvenile age till to his death. He left Malawi in 1964 and migrated to the then Rhodesia and settled at Waterloo in the then Murewa Tribal Trust Land working for a white man called Perch as storeskeeper and tailor. He continued his medical practise and helped out lots and lots of sick people in the farms and villages. He had a family of four boys and one girl and married to Emily Kalowa nee Muhowa. In their order of age he bore John Kalowa born in 1965, Rabson Witness Kalowa born in 1969, Afiki Kalowa born in 1971, James Kalowa born in 1974 and Chiedza Kalowa born in 1979. Lapken later left Peech Stores in the heat of Chimurenga war in Rhodesia in 1975 and went to start city life in the then Salisbury based in Chirambahuyo section of Seke area. In 1981 he changed to Bulawayo's Pumula suburb whilst his family was like ing in Bere village, Mukarakate area in Murewa. He left Bulawayo for Hwange in 1986 where he lives and worked as a self employed tailor until his retirement in 2001 when he came back to join his family in Murewa. This time the family had shifted to Uzumba District living in Mudzimbasekwa village near Nhakiwa. After retirement he never stopped treating folks and friends in need of medical care. His wife became ill and died in 2002 and was buried in Mudzimbasekwa village near Nhakiwa in Uzumba, Zimbabwe. Seven years down the line, he succumbed to hypertension and stroked in 2008 and died in 2010 under the watchful eye of his first born, John Kalowa and his wife Shelter Kalowa who nursed him for the two years at their residence in Msasa where John was employed as a Plant Superintendent at Zimbawe Phosphate Industries, ZmPhos. Like his wife he was laid to rest at Mudzimbasekwa village.
