Name Origin

There are two theories on the meaning of the name Karantalis. Both stem from the period of Ottoman rule in Greece. According to the first theory, Karadagli was the name of a middle or low rank Ottoman official in Central or Northern Greece who was assasinated by the patriarch of what would become the Karantalis family of the southwestern part of Greece. After the assasination of the Ottoman official, this man fled to mount Pindus and started his new family. Either through bragging to his new found community members, or through rumours that eventually spread to the area, the assasin was nicknamed after the assasinated: Karantalis.
According to the second theory, the meaning of the name Karantalis can be found in its Turkish spelling: Karadagli. Karadagli is a toponymic surname that means "the one who came from the black mountain" (Kara= black, dag=mountain). Black mountain is a toponym with a widespread usage so that the geographic origin of the name can not be precisely traced.
