Summary

Originating in the "Ras" region of Serbia, the Karkusiewicz family (a warrior class family) moved into Hungary and then Poland while fighting against the Ottoman Empire. The surname seems to refer to the fact that the family bred the horses for Poland's Hussar ("winged horsemen").  This is what the oral history of the family also claims.

History

The surname Karkusiewicz was uncommon prior to the 16th century and the family was of the "warrior" class. Because they were often fighting in wars, they seemed to have left their original location of  "Ras" (a region in Serbia) and, in fighting the Ottoman Empire, moved on to Hungary and then into Poland. Name Origin

The first part and 2 syllables indicate "From the back of the neck" and "strong" or Strength" thereby confirming the oral history of breeding strong horses for the Kingdom of Poland's famous "Hussar" winged horsemen. The area north of the City of Kielce is named "Konskie" and was where the origin of "Silne Kark" started. The 3rd and 4th syllables are common in Slavic languages and designate "heir to" or "heir of"  - most common to the English world as in the use of "Tsarevich" designating the next in line as the Russian emperor.
