More than a century ago, a tradesman travelling all around the island of Cyprus trading his goods, was called by the name of Karmios, since he came from the village Karmi. This village was a trading center, since ancient times going back beyond 1900-1625 BC. The village connected Syria with the Aegean and beyond.

Karmi is an interesting and important town and has been since ancient times. The Karmi Effigy, one important artifact in Kármi,  is the oldest human figure relief discovered in Cyprus. Thought to represent the goddess of fertility, the weathered figure was discovered carved into the corridor of Tomb 6. The Karmi Necropolis tombs themselves date from between 1900 and 1800BC, which makes them older than the Bronze Age royal tombs in Salamis.
Besides ancient ruins and artifacts,  the appeal of Karmi is being located so high in the Five Finger Mountains with only the jagged peaks and St Hilarion Castle above you. However, downhill, traveling only 10 minutes by car, and you are already at the coast road. Just a few minutes' drive to the east is the historic town of Kyrenia, with perhaps the prettiest Venetian harbour in the whole of North Cyprus.
