Keklak Last Name History & Origin
AddHistory
The Keklak name, which in middle- and eastern-European languages translates to "Partridge," appeared in Poland first any time before the eighteenth century. Due to industrial revolutions and the encouragement of globalization, some Polish Keklaks moved to United States, France, and other countries.
A family of Keklaks immigrated to mining towns of Pennsylvania through Ellis Island between 1880 and 1910, but they were poor throughout the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression and would starve without taking on dangerous coal mining jobs. One male Keklak died in the early twentieth century in an electrical incident in a mineshaft somewhere in or near Centralia; it was unclear whether this member was electrocuted by accident or had been murdered.
Only a few hundred Keklaks exist in the United States according to the 2020 national census, but many family members still reside in Ocean County, New Jersey, and surrounding counties and states. American Keklaks that identified as male and were of the Lost Generation or any older generation often served in the United States Army, Navy, or other military branches, but few living American Keklaks are veterans or currently serve.
Many younger members assigned the surname "Keklak" at birth in the U.S. are well-off and take on prosperous jobs including radiology, pharmacy, data analysis, computer science, accounting, meteorology, contemporary dancing, primary school education, criminal forensics, etc. American Keklaks that married into the family tend to be of the central or upper middle class as well.
The statuses of existing French Keklaks and Polish Keklaks are unknown, but if anyone knows anything about them, please add more!
Name Origin
Keklak is a relatively recent name only a few millenia old, at most, but the story of its origin is uncertain. In Polish and Uzbek, the surname translates to "partridge," a very aggressive and adaptive species of Eurasian boreal fowl. The species of partridge that most likely inspired the name is either Alectoris graeca or Alectoris chukar, the former more populous in Poland and the latter more close to "Keklak" in common name.
People immorally used partridges of various species as fighting birds in Poland and surrounding areas, and this could have sparked the idea of a Polish person into changing their last name to appear powerful, interesting, or cool in the eyes of other townsfolk. However, this origin story is only speculation and has no actual basis in fact.
