History

One of the kings of Bengal was a patron of knowledge. So he gathered  the best scholar of his kingdom and gave them the title "Khastagir". Although his original title was Dasgupta,he adopted Khastagir as his official sirname. Khastagir is a very honourable title according to ancient bengal history and only one or two deserved it.


 


 


 

Name Origin

The king wanted his favourite scholar to be called something special.At that time bengal was most famous for its Royal Bengal Tigers.The tigers were treated superior to man.So he thought of calling him KHASTAGIR which meant as precious as a tiger.KHAS means precious,TAGIR=tiger

The original spelling is Khastagir although some may write Khastgir or Khastogir

The Khastagirs are mainly originated from Chittagong (Bangladesh).But now they have spread to different parts of India,Bangladesh,Myanmar and even Sri Lanka.

1.Dr.Annadacharan Khastagir,a good friend of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar,who established a girls school in 1907 at Chittagong, when education for women was unacceptable.The school is now run by the Bangladeshi Government and is named Dr.Khastagir's Girls School.The school has produced many famous faces including Prithilata Woddeour.
2.Sudhir Khastagir was a famous Indian painter.
3. Ms. Prity Khastgir is an Intellectual Property Lawyer practising at New Delhi
