Updated Kleinerman Biographies

Joseph Kleinerman was born on January 12, 1912 in Spring Valley, New York to mother Rose Kleinerman. He lived in New York City, Queens, and the Bronx. He worked as a clerk for the US Post Office in New York City. In October 1943, Joseph was deployed overseas to the European Theater of Operations, where he served as a Staff Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 290th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division. In recognition of his outstanding service, Joseph was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. After the end of the war, Joseph returned to the United States and was honorably discharged on February 7, 1946. He returned to civilian life and continued to live in Queens, New York. In 1958, Joe helped to found the Road Runners Club of America, an organization dedicated to promoting running as a sport and a way of life. He was also instrumental in establishing the New York chapter of the club, and together with Fred Lebow, he worked tirelessly to organize the first New York City marathon in 1970. But Joe's contribution to the sport of running went far beyond just organizing races. In 1967, he joined forces with Vince Chiapetta and Nina Kuscsik in a national movement to allow women to compete in distance races. At the time, women were only allowed to run races shorter than a mile, but Joe and his colleagues believed that women were just as capable as men when it came to running longer distances. Their efforts paid off, and in 1972, the Boston Marathon allowed women to compete for the first time. Joe was thrilled to see this change, and he continued to support and encourage women runners throughout his life. Despite all his work behind the scenes, Joe was also an accomplished runner in his own right. He estimated that he had run 500 races over the course of his lifetime, and he finished tenth in the Boston Marathon twice, in 1941 and 1942.
