Summary

Kokela is Ndebele, but it's a little more complicated than that. Kokela's people were originally Sotho, and they came into contact with the Ndebele in the early 1800s. Kokela joined the Ndebele under Mabena, and they settled in what is now the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The Ndebele were originally a part of the Zulu kingdom. So while Kokela is Ndebele, he had a complex cultural and historical background.

Name Origin

Surnames comes as names. It is believed that he was begotten by Mcumbatha kaKholo as Khokhela. Khokhela ka Mncumbatha went to seek refuge at Basotho settlements. The name Khokhela was derived to "Kokela" and the name was used as a surname by his descendents who were Sotho. His descendent who was a traditional healer joined amaNdebele kaManala and was the an advisor and a traditional healer at Mabena palace after Jiyane.
