Summary

German-origin name with US-based immigration in mid-1800s.  Relatively small family that had an immigration to central-US in the mid-1800s.  Part of the family originally stayed in the East Coast of the United States  but because of the ease of international travel the name is not as localized as it once was. Kottmyer may also be spelled as Kottmeyer or Kottmeir and the surname may refer to the owner of a large portion of land.

History

It is very likely that the surname Kottmyer is German, myer (meyer) being a early form of a high-end town's burger in Germany.  The Kott portion I'm not sure of as it is generally associated with a city (of which I'm not sure of at this time).
This is more recent history, but the dispersion of Kottmyer family members shows a discernible pattern in the United States and this can be seen by the fact that people have  clustered around certain towns. Kottmyers' in the United States seem to be concentrated in two specific areas.  One is in Pennsylvania and the other is near Kentucky around the Cincinnatti, OH region.  It can be surmised that the Kottmyer's immigrated in the early to mid 1800s to the United States and that some of these individuals later made a movement in the mid-1800s to Kentucky where they became rather wealthy businessmen in small towns (proof of this look up Andersen Ferrry online).  I don't have much information on the Pennsylvania side as I'm from the Kentucky portion of the family.

Kottmyer may also be spelled as Kottmeyer or Kottmeir.  The second is most likely the original, while the first is a corruption of the original name.

Nationality & Ethnicity

The name is German, but many members of the family, especially those that immigrated to the US, are of mixed origin.  This is purely due to the fact that any immigrant family that stays a long time in a country has a high probability of coming from multiple backgrounds. At least one branch of the Kottmyer family is German.
