One day, a rebel cavalry unit staged a cross-border raid. They rounded up all the grown men in the town, and said they would do nothing to harm anyone if no one shot at them. Margaret Landsdown crept to the tent where the grown men were being held, and found by whispering through the canvas that they were all right. After that, someone fired a shot, which my Mother suspects might have been done by one of the Rebel Cavalrymen. The "Rebs" then proceeded to loot mr. Landsdowne's store, and spread bolts of cloth out in the muddy streets to be trampled by their horses before leaving.
Mother always admired Margaret's bravery for going to see if her Father was still well.
