The spelling Lauhead was pronounced Locheed in the early days of the name. Early settlers with this name debated the idea of changing the spelling. Some changed it to Lawhead, some back to Laughead, some said to leave it alone. Some changed it to Lawhead in the 1920's only to change it back some years later. When this part of the clan migrated to Northern Ireland, they began spelling it Loughead to better fit into the Irish way of speaking. When they came to the thirteen colonies, they tried to fit it into the American form of English, and changed it to Laughead. They dropped the "g" because people started calling them Laugh head, or Log head.
