I’ve “rescued” an old photograph identified as Cornellia BEAL LEONARD HARTY which was taken at the J. Beardsley Studio in Ithaca, NY. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880’s with Cornelia appearing to be in her 30’s or 40’s at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Cornelia: Cornelia BEAL or BALL was b. 16 Nov 1840 and married first Mark LEONARD and then her second marriage was to Martin VanBuren HARTY (1839-1914). Cornelia died 14 Feb 1911 in Ithaca and is buried in the Ithaca City Cemetery in Ithaca. Her obituary indicates that she lived in Ithaca her entire life and that her surviving family members included a daughter, Mrs. Clara CONRAD (1859-1929); two sons, William H. LEONARD and Walter H. LEONARD (1863-1941); all of Ithaca along with a Brother Gilbert BALL of Rochester, NY. Census records provide the following details: 1860 census of Ithaca, NY: Mark LEONARD, age 30, a Boat Builder, born NY Cornelia LEONARD, age 18, born NY Eva LEONARD, age 1, born NY 1870 census of Ithaca, NY: Martin V. HARTY, age 32, a Groom, born NY Cornelia HARTY, age 29, born NY Clara HARTY, age 11, born NY William HARTY, age 7, born NY Walter HARTY, age 7, born NY 1880 census of Ithaca, NY: Martin V. HARTY, age 40, a Railroad Engineer, born NY, parents born NY Cornelia HARTY, wife, age 38, Keeping House, born NY, parents born England/NY William H. HARTY, son, age 16, at Home, born NY, parents born NY Walter H. HARTY, son, age 16, Tinsmith Apprentice, born NY, parents born NY Clara LEONARD, stepdau, age 19, at Home, born NY, parents born NY 1900 census of Ithaca, NY: Martin HARTY, age 61, born Apr 1839, born NY, parents born NY, a Locomotive Engineer Cornelia HARTY, wife, age 58, born Nov 1842, 3 children/3 living, born NY, parents born England/NY Walter LEONARD, stepson, age 36, born Sept 1863, married 2 years, born NY, parents born NY, a Boilermaker 1910 census of Ithaca, NY: Martin V. HARTY, age 64, 1st marriage 40 years, born NY, parents born NY, a University Building Engineer Cornelia HARTY, wife, age 68, 2nd marriage 40 years, 3 children/3 living, born NY, parents born England/NY Walter H. LEONARD, stepson, age 46, born NY, parents born NY, a Boilermaker Machinist And living directly next door… Clara E. CONRAD, age 49, married 30 years, 1 child/1 living, born NY, parents born NY, a Dressmaker I’m uncertain if Cornelia’s maiden name was BEAL or BALL based on the conflict between the note on the photograph and the obituary reference to her brother’s name being BALL. I’m hoping to locate someone from Cornelia’s family so that this lovely old photograph can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
