Melbern Liford was born 3 Aug 1925, in Whitney county, Kentucky, to (Rev) Monroe, Sr and Rachel Maud (White) Liford. He was the oldest of 7 children, He had 3 younger brothers and 2 younger sisters. His brothers Talmage, Monroe, and Leslie all served in World War II in the US Army, and survived. His brother Doyle also served in the US Army, but I do not know when or where.
In the 1940 census, Melbern was living at home and his occupation was listed as farmer.
He enlisted in the Army on 9 Nov 1943, in Loiusville, Kentucky. He advanced to the rank of PFC, and was assigned to the 48th Armoured Infantry Batallion, 7th Armoured Division. He was kikked at the Battle of the Bulge, Belgium, on 21 Dec 1944, in heavy enemy action.
He is buried in the Ryam Cemetery, in Williamsburg, Whitney, Kentucky.
